Monogram Monday
As you all know it is our mission to preppy-fy the world one monogram at a time. The Preppy Mafia kills…with kindness!
Every Monday (and a few other days as well) I’m monogramming one unsuspecting individual. I want to paint the world pink and green, bringing cheer to peoples lives. We have enough “stuff,” to worry about so watch your backs – we’ll monogram you! If you have any cute monogramming stories please email them to me: Beth(at)SocialClimbers(dot)net.

The Lost Generation
The Preppy Mafia LOVES the blog MonogramsAndMargaritas and Paige, the author, is a preppy college student. It is always nice to hear what the “younger” generations are thinking about things like The Preppy Mafia. So without further ado I present Paige’s thoughts on The Lost Generation!
_______________________________________
The future belongs to the young. Unfortunately Muffy, it’s scary how ill versed the youth are in preppy past.
I attend a major southern university where we still have a thriving Greek system, we wear dresses in our school’s colors on game days, and we worship at the alter of Lilly Pulitzer. We appear cool as cukes as we pop our collars up, but ask the majority of us what kind of preppy girl we are and the façade fades as, more often then not, you’re greeted with blank stares. Personally, I’d considered myself the cute girl, I do tend to take one in every color, or maybe the girl who enjoys a good party, I feel I’m always claiming, “I really shouldn’t” and then I proceed to indulge in another margarita.
The Preppy Handbook hasn’t pierced my generation as it did in the previous; in fact I’ve found it to be regarded as something akin to an urban legend. I’m not claiming everyone in my generation is ignorant of the tome; it’s just disheartening to see so many imitators living the farce, who are completely unaware they were outed decades ago.
Things have arguably changed since its publication in the early eighties; Lilly left us and returned with an incredibly increased popularity, Ralph Lauren created a universe of style that is uniquely a prep’s own and has become a major player in ones closet, and monogramming your car is now entirely acceptable.
Yet, should we forsake the masterpiece whose ownership was almost mandatory twenty years ago? As I hoard and dispense copies to loved ones on holidays and special occasions, I can only hope this deed causes a slight ripple of change. Or perhaps my lost generation’s best hope is the arrival of True Prep in August and the further hope that it lives up to the original.

Monogram Monday!

The Preppy Mafia loves Looking 4 Lilly!
I’m in love with all things preppy, pink & green and Lilly Pulitzer. So of course one of my favorite sites is Looking 4 Lilly on Etsy ?
She has the cutest things: head bands, Lillyesque light switches and my new must have (and I don’t even sew)

You are the queen of all things pink, green and monogrammed. As the God Mother of The Preppy Mafia when did you first start loving the preppy life?
My grandparents and Dad and all my Uncles are from the West End of Richmond which is equiv to your “Main Line” so my Grandmother was very involved in Richmond Society and quite the prep herself. I remember her wearing vintage Talbots as well as Lilly. We had croquet parties on the lawn and even though I know smoking is bad, there was something so “rich” about the smell in her house of perfume, cigarette smoke and 5pm scotch and water. I just loved everything about her; her Old Richmond drawl, her jewelery, her house and furniture – I wanted so much to be girlie like my grandmother even though my own mother didn’t have the time for me and kept me looking like a tomboy (BAGGAGE).
How was 2preppygirls.com born. Tell us your story.
I have ALWAYS loved everything monogrammed and that was heightned by the birth of each of my 2 daughters. I bought monogrammed baby stuff everywhere I could find! And if it wasn’t monogrammed, then I embroidered a monogram on it! The more cute websites I visited the more I became obsessed!
One afternoon I was at a friends house looking at her little girl’s room and she had a nursery rhyme all the way around the border. I thought it was a stencil but she told me is was a wall decal in Matte that looks like it’s painted on. I did not want a nursery rhyme but instead envisioned a giant wall monogram above Lindsey’s crib. I Googled and Googled and I found one!! When I put it up on the wall, I was floored by how cute it was… I emailed the girl who sold it to me and she suggested that I have home parties selling her stuff…. that turned into my husband building me a website – it kind of exploded from there! I have so much fun finding all sorts of preppy treasures and adding them to my website!!
The name, “2 Preppy Girls” is for my daughters, Lindsey (4) and Jamie (2).
What is your absolute favorite must have preppy item.
I would looove to say my Lilly shifts, but I seriously need to lose some weight from having my girlies, ummmm – so maybe my old school gold frame RayBans? I know it’s so much more chic to wear huge celebrity sunglasses, but I have just always loved my Raybans…. Also, I still have a pair of LLBean mocasin loafers that I love, and I adore my monogrammed clogs…. I love a grosgrain ribbon ponytail.
OH! I know!! My Pearl earrings! Friends, boyfriends, etc have all given me gifts of various and lovely earrings but I have been wearing my big Pearl Earrings of my grandmothers for about 20 years or so and you will rarely ever see me without them. If I am awake, they are on me. In 20 years, I have worn a different pair less than a dozen times. So yes, definitely, my Pearls are my MUST HAVE item.
For all the preps just beginning to monogram and prep out their life-where do they start?
Gosh, that is hard – but I guess you only have to look at Polo Ralph Lauren pictures or Lilly or old school Talbots photos to see true Preppy. Plaids, Tartens, crisp lines – elegance.
Oh, there are so many different TYPES of preppy. For example, there is the VERY conservative Preppy, like my parents, they are straight out of an LLBean, Lands End and Talbots catalog. (they are both doctors and you can TOTALLY tell). They are very inconspicuous Preppy. (They own a lot of big ticket itmes like homes, boats, etc, but if you saw them on the street you wouldn’t know it). But then there is the HIGH END Preppy – this is what I STRIVE to be!! This is a bit more flashy with brighter colors lots of brand names and obvious patterns… I can’t help it, I love it!!!! And then there are lots of types of Preppy in between, you just have to find your own style! And wear it with CONFIDENCE!!
